In 2001, Drake began acting on Degrassi, which premiered on Canadian television just ten days before his birthday on October 14. Five years later, Drake would go on to release his first mixtape, Room for Improvement, on Valentine’s day. The mixtape sold 6,000 copies that year. A year later he released Comeback Season on his own label (aptly named, October’s Very Own), which got the attention of Lil’ Wayne and earned him a spot on Tha Carter III tour. Then in 2009 he released So Far Gone, which charted at number two on Billboard and entrenched him in a bidding war, ultimately signing with Lil’ Wayne’s label, Young Money Entertainment. The rest of Drake’s life “is history,” as they say, since he was then thrusted into our pop-culture lexicon as a household name.
